ABOUT THE ARTISTS

MUTINDA

Mutinda from Kenya – winner of the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) 2010 World Music Category – is a self taught
musician who began pursuing his career in his childhood by playing a homemade guitar.

Singing mostly in Swahili and his mothertongue – Kikamba – Mutinda talks about the adorable and even the detestable
things life presents. For Mutinda music is an opportunity to
share his inner realizations and truths and to connect with people through a personal life experience.

Mutinda’s music is a journey through time and space. Some has termed his style “world/afro-fusion” as it contains the rare sounds and rhythms of Kenyan people’s traditional music meeting the global contemporary influences of today. Marrying African traditional instrumentation such as nyatiti, maboom-boom drums, djembe, African flute with global elements
as guitar, bass, sax, violin and drums, he has created a unique style of soul-searching melodies and contagious rhythms.

MAIA VON LEKOW

Maia brings a dynamic new color to Kenya’s contemporary musical landscape. Born and raised in Nairobi to a German/Italian mother and Kenyan father, Maia’s unique heritage is combined into a fresh sound weaving jazz, funk, folk & blues all sprinkled with swahili spice.

Since returning to Kenya in 2007, Maia has established her current live act, a high-energy 6-piece band that has been making waves throughout East Africa, gracing the stages of prominent festivals across Africa such as HIFA (Zimbabwe), Kigali UP (Rwanda), Sauti za Busara (Zanzibar), The Great Rift Valley Festival and Blankets & Wine (Kenya).
