Over the last few years there has been a rising tide of anti-gay sentiment in Africa. A number of countries have passed harsh laws that are intended to punish individuals who openly state that they are gay.

For example, on 24th February 2014 an anti-gay law was passed in Uganda, stipulating life imprisonment for gay sex and criminalizing the promotion of homosexuality. This was barely a month after similar legislation had been passed in Nigeria.

In other countries such as Senegal and Kenya there are renewed attempts to enforce hitherto silent anti-gay laws. As a way of encouraging public discourse on this subject, the Gay Kenya Trust in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Kenya will be organising the fifth annual Out Film Festival to showcase LGBTI-themed films from Africa and across the world. The screenings will be followed by discussions of the central themes and the challenges faced by the LGBTI community in Kenya.
