Mashemeji Derby abandoned after crowd trouble
The much anticipated ‘Mashemeji’ derby between Sportpesa Kenyan Premier League leaders Gor Mahia against AFC Leopards ended prematurely on Sunday.
Chaos erupted in the stadium, forcing match officials to call off the tie with 25 minutes left to play.
Trouble started when Gor Mahia were handed a penalty after Leopards’ skipper Jackson Saleh handled the ball in the box.
Hooligans livid by the turn of events, started hurling missiles into the field, forcing a brief stoppage.
Attempt by match stewards, stadium security and police to restore normalcy having failed, officials deemed it necessary to abandon the tie.
Several Gor Mahia fans were arrested after they went into the Central Business District celebrating and encountered AFC fans where they pelted stones at each other forcing Police to use teargas.
At least 15 Gor fans were arrested and stones hidden in a paperbag recovered from one of them.
They have been taken to Central Police station for more interrogation.
The match final decision now rests on the shoulders of Independent Disciplinary and Appeals Committee (IDAC).
