Each Alliance Française is a local non-profit organization operating autonomously with no political or religious commitments.
All Alliance Françaises aim the following objectives:
- Offering French classes for all, both in France and abroad
- Develop an appreciation and understanding of French and Francophone cultures
- Promoting cultural diversity
- To assist Kenyan students who want to further university studies in France
Each Alliance Française shares values which drive the network, such as:
- Respect for cultural diversity, a passion for exchanges and solidarity
- The values of the non-profit sector
- Conviviality
- Striving for excellence in all activities undertaken
- Modernity and innovation
Though it works jointly with the French Embassy on numerous common projects, Alliance Française is created at the initiative of the citizens of the country where it exists and is governed by local legislation. It is also managed by a local Board of Trustees.
An international movement
The alliance Française was founded in 1883 in Paris by renowned humanists such as Louis Pasteur and Jules Verne with the principal objective of promoting and teaching the French language around the world.
It has since then developed into a global network of 1,016 Alliance Française in 135 countries fostering friendship between people through the promotion of the French language and Arts and cultural exchange.
Nairobi
The Alliance Française de Nairobi was founded in 1949. It was situated along Tom Mboya Street, known as Victoria Street. Over the last sixty years, the Alliance Française de Kenya has developed into one of the largest on the African continent with some 4,000 students learning the French language every year and a leading cultural space.
In order to meet the growing demand for the French language in Nairobi, an annex in Buruburu was created in 2006.
Currently, the Alliance Française is present in 4 different cities:
Mombasa
The Alliance Française de Mombasa is in operation since 1975, offers regular and special French language courses for both individuals and companies, translation and interpretation services(English/French) and a series of engaging cultural activities.
Branches in Eldoret and Kisumu
